Tempurature Tips

So the little guy has some boogers and is a little bit under the weather. Infact I am feeling a bit under the weather myself.. yet again.. but anyway so today he felt warm and I was trying to get his temperature. I don't think I have every successfully taken his temperature. I got out the ear thermometer and tried to take it with that as it only needs to be in place for about 3 seconds. I couldn't get the thing in deep enough without him freaking out. So I guess his ears are probably a bit sensitive with the cold. I got a reading of 95 degrees. Yeah thats not right!

So I got out the regular digital thermometer and put it under his arm. He wouldn't stay still long enough for this one as it feels like it takes 20 minutes to get a freaking reading. It was out of his arm before it beeped. So again not a successful take. Last attempt, I put the thermometer in his groin and held his legs up so it would be there nice and tight. I tried talking to him and kissing him alot and being silly so he wouldn't mind me holding his legs. You guessed it. I couldn't keep it the entire time and the back started arching and the legs went fling. No good reading here either!

I haven't tried the hiney. A friend of mine suggested trying when he is asleep. My son is 18 months old.

How do you guys get a good reading?

I use the digital under the arm and hold the sucker down...that's the best way I have found for the little ones. Best of luck...2 of my girls have the flu right now...yuck!

Oh taking temps is always fun! I got one that you put in their ear.. it's pretty quick.. but now they have the one out that reads the forehead - imo, worth it. I would not, never did (with 4 kids) do a rectal temp, I don't care what they say.. Honestly, I don't put much in to fevers, unless I know it's *really* bad - I mean, concerningly so.. otherwise, I can tell they have a fever, I treat accordingly. It isn't going to matter if their fever is 99 or 101.. they don't feel good, period.. I let them sleep, eat popsicles, drink clear fluids.. but I don't push the issue of temp taking.
